Dialysis transport

Belgian health insurance will reimburse your travel expenses to and from the dialysis center for each time you receive dialysis there. Also with home dialysis you will receive reimbursement for each time you go for a consultation at the control center.

You will receive 0.36 euros per kilometer, regardless of the means of transport.

From 1 April 2025, the reimbursement of transport costs for dialysis will be done automatically based on what the hospital charges. The distance that is taken into account for this is the shortest distance between your official place of residence and the hospital.

For transport from 1 April, you no longer need to submit an application. The separate scheme for reimbursement of public transport also expires. A fixed amount per kilometre is always paid, regardless of the means of transport.

Payment under the new scheme will be made within 30 days after CM has received the necessary information from the hospital.

The following conditions applied to journeys made before 1 April:
  • Are you travelling by public transport? You will receive a full refund, provided you travel in second class.
  • For other means of transport you will receive 0.36 euros per kilometre, without any limitation on the number of kilometres.
What should you do?
  • Individual movements
  • Movement in group
    • When traveling in a group, you will be picked up from home together with a number of other patients and returned in the same vehicle.
    • The patient who lives or stays furthest from the center completes the application form: application form for travel expenses for group dialysis .
    • The other patients are also filled in on the form.
    • The patient living furthest away delivers the completed application form to CM. The compensation is then divided among the different patients.
